Product Information

Key Features

  • Walnes formulation algal nutrient, recommended by the UK Culture Collection for algae, protozoa and flagellates
  • Particularly suited to flagellates such as Isochrysis and Tetraselmis, and used for Chlorella vulgaris, Nannochloropsis, Isochrysis galbana, Dunaliella salina and Skeletonema
  • Supplies nitrogen, phosphorus and magnesium with iron, zinc, manganese, copper, molybdenum, cobalt and boron, plus B12, thiamine and biotin
  • Dosed at 0.15 g/L — 150 g per 1,000 L of culture — for both batch and continuous cultivation, and suits systems running at pH 7.5–8.5
  • Made up as a stock at 1.5 kg per 10 L and used at 1 mL per litre of culture
  • Advanced and tubular reactors at higher cell densities can be run at 2 to 4 times the dose rate
  • For diatoms, add 30 g of sodium metasilicate per 1,000 L of culture water after the Cell-Hi; shipped as Dangerous Goods, so ask us for freight
  • Sizing — 1.5 kg makes 10,000 L of medium at Walnes strength, so divide your culture volume in litres by 10,000 and multiply by 1.5 to get the kilograms per batch, then choose the 1 kg unit or the 20 kg case

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do I need?
Dose at 150 grams per 1,000 litres of culture. 1.5 kilograms makes 10,000 litres at Walnes strength, so divide your culture volume in litres by 10,000 and multiply by 1.5 to get the kilograms per batch.
Which algae does Cell-Hi Walnes suit?
It is particularly suitable for flagellate algae such as Isochrysis and Tetraselmis, and is also used for Chlorella vulgaris, Nannochloropsis, Isochrysis galbana, Dunaliella salina and Skeletonema.
Should I choose Walnes or Cell-Hi F2P?
Walnes is the flagellate formulation. Cell-Hi F2P follows the Guillard F/2 recipe and is the usual choice for diatoms such as Chaetoceros calcitrans, Chaetoceros muelleri and Thalassiosira pseudonana.
How do I make up a stock solution?
Formulate the stock at 1.5 kilograms per 10 litres and use it at 1 millilitre per litre of culture. Sterilise with a 0.2 micron syringe filter or by autoclaving.
Do I need to add silicate?
Yes for diatoms. Add 30 grams of sodium metasilicate for each 1,000 litres of culture water after adding the Cell-Hi.
Can I dose harder in a photobioreactor?
Yes. For advanced and tubular reactors giving much higher algal concentrations, multiply the dose rate by two to four times if required.
How should it be stored?
Store it in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight and high temperatures so the nutrients stay stable and effective.
