Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose the right air pump?
Use the duty point method: total the air your diffusers need, work out the pressure they need it at, then pick the model whose air flow at that pressure meets the demand with a little in reserve.
What pressure do I need for a given diffuser depth?
Allow about 10 kPa (100 mbar) for each metre of water above the diffuser, then add pipework friction and diffuser back pressure, which together commonly add another 5 to 15 kPa.
Why is every flow quoted at 1 m water depth?
A diaphragm pump delivers less air as back pressure rises, so quoting all seven models at the same 1 m depth lets you compare them directly and size against your own depth.
Are these single or three phase?
All Kamair models run on standard single-phase mains, so no three-phase supply or switchboard work is needed; for larger duties a three-phase side channel blower is the better choice.
Do I need an air filter and a pressure relief valve?
Yes – an inlet air filter keeps dust off the diaphragms and a pressure relief valve protects the pump if a line blocks or a valve is closed, and both are available from Fresh By Design.
How noisy and how hot do they run?
Kamair pumps are a low-noise design, but they still shed heat through the aluminium housing, so mount them clear of the water in a ventilated, shaded spot rather than in a sealed box.
What maintenance do they need?
Keep the inlet filter clean and replace the diaphragm kit at the interval in the manual; access is straightforward and the work can be done on site.
